Frequently asked questions

Polymeric sand is a combination of sand, colouring, and glue molecules.  The more glue molecules present, the more superior the product is.  During the installation process, when polymeric sand is watered, the glue molecules activate and create a more powerful bond than cement.

It is often installed in between pavers and natural stone instead of mortar.  It is becoming increasingly more popular because of its colour possibilities.  Polymeric sand offers home owners the freedom to revitalize their landscaping project by changing the colour of their sand.  It adds an entirely different look for a minimal cost.

In addition, more and more home owners are deciding against installing concretes because of its tendency to crack in the cold of our Canadian winters.  Instead, they are choosing to go with interlock and natural stone which is proving to be more durable.

Visibly, when polymeric sand breaks down, you will see weeds growing through the dirt.  Any insect infestation is another obvious sign that the sand has broken down and needs to be replaced.  The break down of polymeric sand is a super food for insects.

Aside from the obvious visible appearance, weeds and dirt will accumulate.  If you don’t change your polymeric sand once it breaks down, you risk water and moisture getting underneath the stone from the joints.  When the temperature drops, the water and moisture will freeze and cause the stone to move or crack.  This will unfortunately lead to more costly repairs like re-leveling and replacement of stones.

Yes and no.  Recently, polymeric sand manufacturers have gone on record to state that by sealing polymeric sand, you double the life of the sand.  According to the research and numbers, sealing your polymeric sand makes sense.

In commercial landscaping, sealing polymeric sand has become the new norm.  Aside from its cosmetic appeal, sealing prolongs the life of the sand.

DN Contracting strongly recommends sealing your polymeric sand as soon as possible after installation has taken place.  We seal polymeric sand after a moisture test has been completed.  If you read the fine print, the warranty for most sand companies are only applicable and applied when sealing has been done.  In addition, all samples that we provide for customers from the polymeric sand manufacturers are sealed.

-Interlock with polymeric sand
-Natural stone such as granite and limestone
-Man made stone such as interlock and pavers

DN Contracting uses a variety of sealing products for different materials.  You can choose from low gloss sheen or high gloss sheen or shine.

All sealing products are available with anti slip formulations.

The most obvious reason to seal is simply to protect your landscaping investment.

Sealing prevents moisture and water from penetrating the surface, thus preventing costly repairs.  Sealing also provides an added protection from organic material such as leaves, dirt, oil grease, gum, salt, and calcium by not allowing these materials to penetrate the surface and cause permanent stains.

Sealing also has cosmetic benefits.  It provides a permanent wet look.  DN Contracting offers a variety of products for all surfaces and materials with a variety of finishes ranging from high gloss to loss gloss shine.  All products are available with anti slip formulations.
